Spatulas and Ladles
Ladles have existed since food was first cooked and have been made from crude materials to heavy iron, and aluminum, some with grooves for pouring, others with round or flat edges to scrape soup from the bottom of a pot.
One of many home cooks’ kitchen utensils is the spatula, also known as a turner, fish slicer, frying scoop, or a flipper. Then there are pancake spatulas that actually turn over the frying dough when you squeeze the handle. A tosser is a spatula used primarily for tossing or turning over pancakes.
Usually, a spatula has a broad flat “business end” of the utensil with a long handle so cooks can avoid overheating their hands and burning their arms on the edge of a pan or grill.
Right-handed spatulas are much more common than left-handed ones. Think about it.
We also now have pliable rubber and silicon spatulas with wooden or plastic handles to scrape edges of bowls and other surfaces.
